Moses Pettengill: Peoria\'s Freedom Conductor
Moses Pettengill: Peoria\'s Freedom Conductor
Abolitionist movement historian Corey Curtis of Peoria will discuss “Moses Pettengill: Peoria's Freedom Conductor” in two presentations Sunday, Feb. 12 at Pettengill-Morron House Museum, 1212 W. Moss Ave. The presentations will begin at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The event is being held in conjunction with Black History Month.
Curtis will discuss the connection between Pettengill and the Underground Railroad in Peoria. Pettengill and his wife, Lucy, welcomed enslaved individuals at their now-razed home at Liberty and Jefferson streets, near where the Peoria Civic Center now stands. He will also discuss famous anti-slavery orators, including Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both who spoke in Peoria.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for college and high school students and $3 for ages 6-12 and will include a guided tour of the Moss Avenue mansion Pettengill built in 1868. Tickets are available at 309tix.com or at the door. For more information, contact the Peoria Historical Society at 309-674-1921.
Curtis is a history teacher. He was Peoria Historical Society's Volunteer of the Year in 2019, and he leads the society’s “Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War” history bus tours in summer and fall.

Peoria/Galesburg Area Town Hall with the Illinois Arts Council Agency
Peoria/Galesburg Area Town Hall with the Illinois Arts Council Agency
ArtsPartners of Central Illinois has an exciting opportunity for area artists and arts/cultural organizations — as well as art enthusiasts! Illinois Arts Council Agency (IACA) is conducting three down-state visits, and the Peoria/Galesburg area will be the first visit on Wednesday, February 15. You are invited to attend a Town Hall session with IACA Board Chair Nora Daley, Executive Director Joshua Davis-Ruperto, Deputy Director Encarnacion Teruel, and Program Director Teresa Davis. This relaxed session will give you a chance to learn a bit more about IACA, as well as provide feedback about your individual and collective needs.
The session will take place at the Lakeview Room on the first floor of the Peoria Riverfront Museum beginning at 3:30 PM on Wednesday, February 15. A reception will follow at 4:30 PM with light hors d'oeuvres and beverages. All who have an interest in the arts and culture of our region are invited to join. There is no cost. Free parking is available in the adjacent parking deck. RSVPs are not required but greatly appreciated. Email info@artspartners.net.
Background: IACA is embarking on the process of evaluating their current granting programs, so that it may continue to strengthen and meet the needs of the cultural ecosystem in the state of Illinois. The organization is working in 2023 to make the state of Illinois a national model for arts agencies in this country, and your input will be key as they embark on planning and implementation.
Please send this invitation to any Peoria/Galesburg area groups who you think would be interested in joining us.
Again, RSVPs are not required but greatly appreciated. Email info@artspartners.net.
